Cast iron sewer pipe was the standard material for Houston residential construction from the early 1900s through the early 1980s. It's durable, but not permanent. The interior corrodes progressively from exposure to hydrogen sulfide gas produced by sewage — a process called sulfuric acid corrosion that works from the inside out, invisibly, over decades.
Houston's climate accelerates the process. The combination of high humidity, high water table, and the constant wet-dry cycles from Houston's clay soil puts cast iron under stress that accelerates joint failure and external corrosion simultaneously.
There is no way to assess cast iron pipe condition from a surface inspection or a drainage test. The only way to know what's inside is to put a camera inside. That's what a sewer scope does — and it produces a written report and HD video documentation that stays with the property record.

Channeling
Decades of water flow erode the bottom of the pipe into a groove. Solids no longer drain properly and settle into the channel, accelerating blockages.

Interior corrosion produces a rough, scaled surface that narrows the pipe diameter over time and catches debris with every flush.

Year of construction is the most reliable indicator. If your home was built before approximately 1985 and the sewer line has never been replaced, it is almost certainly cast iron. You can sometimes confirm this by looking at exposed pipe in a basement, crawl space, or where the line exits the foundation — cast iron is dark grey or black, heavy, and has visible joint collars between sections.
Yes. This is the most important thing to understand about cast iron deterioration — it is largely asymptomatic until it isn't. A line can have significant channeling, heavy scale buildup, partial root intrusion, and even a belly, and still drain acceptably day to day. The first symptom many homeowners experience is a complete backup. A scope shows the actual interior condition regardless of how the drains are performing.
Sometimes. Localized issues like a single offset joint or isolated root intrusion at one location can be spot-repaired or cleared. Pipe lining (CIPP — cured-in-place pipe) is also an option in some cases, where a resin liner is installed inside the existing pipe without excavation. However, widespread channeling, heavy scale, or advanced corrosion throughout the line typically means full replacement is the more cost-effective long-term solution. The scope tells you which situation you're dealing with.
These are among the highest-priority neighborhoods in Houston for a sewer scope. Bellaire, West University, and the Heights have some of the oldest residential construction in the city, extremely mature tree canopies with aggressive oak and pecan root systems, and homes that have traded hands multiple times without sewer documentation. No, and that's an important distinction. Cleaning removes blockages — roots, grease, debris. It does not repair deterioration, corrosion, offset joints, bellies, or structural damage. A recently cleaned line can still have significant structural issues that a camera inspection would reveal. A clean drain test and a camera inspection are measuring two very different things.
